The National Directorate of Employment has said the rate of unemployment in the country is high because youths are afraid of taking up self-employment challenges.
The Director-General of the NDE, Mr. Kunle Obayan, urged youths in the country to apply for the skills acquisition training of the agency to enable them to become self-reliant.
Obayan spoke in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during the inauguration of the training of over 360 youths in the state, a statement said on Tuesday.
The statement added that Obayan was represented at the occasion by the Ogun State Co-ordinator of the NDE, Femi Oyenekan.
According to the statement, no fewer than 9,360 youths, who will be trained nationwide, will also be empowered with tools at the end of the five-month training.
The statement read in part, “Obayan said the training exercise is aimed at exposing the participants to the benefits of self employment through skills acquisition training and capacity enhancement in various vocational trades.
“He added that unemployment had become critical because youths are tacitly avoiding the realities of making a living through self-employment. He maintained that self employment through training of youths and the unemployed is the cardinal focus of the NDE.
“Obayan said the mandate of the NDE is to fight unemployment and create jobs. He appealed to unemployed youths roaming the streets to avail themselves of job opportunities of the NDE and become self-employed.”
It added that the candidates would be trained in GSM repair, computer operation and maintenance, photography, video coverage, interior decoration, among others.
